The
purpose of this work was to study the distribution of the mast cells and
their relationship to the tissues of the frog tongue.The tongues from a
male and a female Rana cancrivora raja were used. The tissue were prepared
according to the conventional histological procedure using Bouin's fixation,
dehydration, paraffin embedding and serial sections were cut at 6 micra.
The sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and toluidine blue
and then examined under the light microscope.
The results demonstrated that the location and the amount of mast cells in the tongues were not different between sexes. Numerous mast cells were scattered over the lamina propria, the core of the papillae that contained sensory disc and the epithelium of the ventral surface of the tongue. Plenty of mast cells were observed in the endomysium, perimysium and epimysium, intermingling in the nerve bundles and also embedding closely to and lied into contact with the cell bodies of the neurons within the tongue. Moderate amount of mast cells were seen around the blood vessels.
